Of course I'm perfectly aware of the limitations of the DS. It's not like I was blaming the game for it's suboptimal controls or anything. The original is still, and probably always will be, the definitive version for me. The controls are basically perfect, with the exception of the camera not always wanting to move where you want it to (but this has personally never been a huge issue for me, more of a minor inconvenience). The graphics aren't very detailed but they're still colorful and vibrant which makes them nice to look at. I seem to recall a level that was an island and there were silver stars to collect? The multiplayer and mini-games were neat additions too, but nothing to write home about.Īnyway, I think the original actually hasn't really aged badly. I already noted the more detailed graphics and models, but I believe they added some more content too. If you could select your character on the star selection screen, it definitely would have alleviated this issue. This wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to go to a specific room in the castle to change characters. I think it's neat to put multiple playable characters like that, but because they changed the hat system, now the powerups are locked to specific characters. My other big issue is how the characters were handled. The touch controls were just awkward to use, so I never ended up using them. They added a run button to alleviate it, but that's just another button you have to hold down 99% of the time you're playing the game. ![]() The D-pad is a horrendous substitute for the analog stick because it both locks you into 8-directional movement and to a single speed. The controls are just straight up trash in the remake. I do appreciate the obviously much more detailed textures and models, but I have to agree that the colors make it look much more bland than the vibrant graphics of the original. Extra levels, 30 more stars, more playable characters, a multiplayer and minigame mode, I can't believe anyone would miss out on all of this entirely due to a control scheme which just needs a bit of patience at the very least to get the hang of. There is just far too much content packed into this remake to even bring up the question of which is better. ![]() Guess that's what I get for growing up with a PlayStation. I would also always favour pixelated graphics over the smudgy-looking textures the N64 tended to have. ![]() It led me to become so adaptive to much more unusual control schemes in future games such as Kid Icarus Uprising, where I heard nothing but complaints about the controls being too finicky before I played it and yet, I found them as comfortable as I find anything else.Ĭomparing the graphics to the original, what exactly is the issue here? This game came up with the NSMB style before NSMB even came out, with many of NSMB's assets coming from this game itself. So much so that I completely ignored the potential issues with the controls. This was back when I didn't even realize 3D Mario games were a thing, so I was just all the more amazed to see this.
